Being an Intern in Mexico

By Angela Laurie-Mann 1 year ago

When I told my friends that I was going to Mexico for 6 months, their response was always “that’s crazy Angie! Are you sure?”, and yes I agreed with them that it felt crazy to disappear from my normal life and begin a six month internship with GVI in Mexico. Believe me when I was hopping on the plane and saying my final farewells to my family, I felt very unsure and 6 months felt like a crazy amount of time.

However, when I arrived here and I met the staff and the other volunteers, I had never felt more welcomed in my life! Suddenly I knew I had made the right choice, and all my insecurities melted away. The projects here in Playa Del Carmen are amazing! I am very lucky as an intern to be able to have the time to visit all three of them, and work personally with the people there. Nearly every day I work at the Ludoteca, where I have been able to help the kids there with their homework, present classes on Green Actions, as well as a weekly English lesson. It has been amazing to be able to help the kids, it puts a smile on my face every time they learn something new. There is always a new task or activity that the Ludotecarias need you to do, or help them with, and there is never a dull moment!

The Special Needs School here in Playa is another project that I am always keen to partake in. The work there is always something that I have rarely done before, and learning these new skills to help the children there, is challenging. But it is the most rewarding experience, and I enjoy it a lot. Watching and assisting in the different therapies such as water, equine and dog therapy, has been the highlight of this project for me.

Having the weekend to roam around and explore the local areas have been great! I’ve already been snorkeling at Isla Cozumel, Kayaking at Bacalar, the lagoon of seven colors, and exploring the ruins of Tulum. I have been in Mexico for 6 weeks now, and I can’t even imagine leaving it! 6 months I have come to realize is not as long as it seems, and I know when my time nears its end, I will be begging to stay for longer!
