A new game plan in Africa
27 November 2008Want to get away from all the economic doom and gloom? Now is the opportunity to follow that dream occupation you always wanted with GVI offering a host of training courses and schemes. One volunteer is about to change her life on the South Africa SanParks course.
Tracy Brookshaw, 36, a divorcée from York, says: “I have had a rough couple of years and I decided I either plodded along with life the way it was or I needed to do something radical to change things.”
She found herself struggling to cope when her company, which sells new houses, cut the working week of its sales executives from five days to three as the housing market slumped across the country. “It was tough because we were not earning much commission, either,” she says.
The change gave her the impetus to take a break and try something different: in January she is leaving to work on a six-month project in South Africa’s national parks with Global Vision, and she might extend it to a year.
She says: “I needed a change anyway – and it gave me the push I needed to try something new. I’m hoping this course will change my life and give me a new perspective. I am absolutely petrified, but I am more scared to do nothing. I might never get this opportunity again so if I let it pass me by I would regret it.
“Taking a gap year was not something I considered before. At my age I was a little bit worried, but there are quite a lot of people that are now doing these things and taking the opportunity the credit crunch gives them to do it.”
